The European Review of Books #12

Issue #12 explores contemporary Europe through literature, politics, history, and technology. Inside, you'll find a visit to an Irish subsea cable station, disappearing winters, the pull of fascism, sex workers and national identity, and the invisible work of interpreters at the Yugoslavia Tribunal. The issue also looks at Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski, war photographer Lee Miller, the ethics of paying attention, and the philosophy of book design. Plus, a newly translated story by Ingeborg Bachmann and essays asking what remains of international law.

Books? Review? Europe? A European Review of Books would sound thrice-doomed. And yet here we are. The ERB is made up of the things you'd expect: fiction, essays, poetry, art, and reviews. It contains stuff about Europe and stuff from Europe. Long-form and short-form. But there are also things inside you might not expect to find: pops of colours, 'pearls' of wisdom, multilingual articles, giving an altogether new reading experience and allowing you to keep track of your progress through the publication.
