New Philosopher #51

Why does silence make us uncomfortable, and what happens when distractions finally fall away and we have to face ourselves? Editor of New Philosopher Nigel Warburton reflects on silence through the work of composer John Cage and writer Alphonse Allais, while editor Zan Boag talks to neuroscientist and musician Daniel J. Levitin. Plus, six thinkers, including Michel Serres, Seneca, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, share their perspectives on sound, noise, and silence.

New Philosopher is an independent magazine devoted to examining and explaining ideas from thinkers across history and the present day, always with the goal of helping its readers live happier, more liberated lives in mind. For curious people looking for solutions to the fundamental issues faced by humankind.
